Course Descriptions:

A Practical Framework for Navigating Ethical Challenges in Collaborative Community Research

To effectively mobilize community-based organizations in scientific research projects, important ethical issues must be addressed. A framework for establishing effective community-research partnerships, developed by the Community Collaboration Core (CCC) of the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies, can be used as a tool for navigating these issues. In this workshop, we will present our framework and facilitate a group exercise to demonstrate its application.

Professional Boundaries

This half-day training will focus on skills, information and attitudes inherent in establishing and maintaining appropriate professional relationships with clients.  Using skill building activities, case studies and didactic presentations, participants will have an opportunity to explore the importance of establishing clear boundaries with clients, define the role of workers in establishing boundaries and practice effective interventions for working with clients who may violate appropriate boundaries..

Cultural Proficiency for Treatment Providers

This one-day training will help participants gain an understanding of how a client’s cultural experience impacts on their motivation to stop using drugs and successfully complete a treatment plan.  The understanding of a client’s culture will increase the likelihood that the drug court treatment plan integrates the clients’ individual strengths, needs and resources and therefore increase the likelihood of a successful outcome.

Overview of HIV/AIDS

This basic course will cover definitions of HIV and AIDS, description of the spectrum of illness, HIV antibody testing, modes of transmission, preventive risk reduction practices, and some common barriers to noncompliance around them.

Gambling: The Hidden Addiction

This course will review in depth gambling addiction in three phases as defined by The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.  The course will highlight why compulsive gambling is a hidden addiction and review characteristics of both gambling and substance abuse disorders.  Participants will have an opportunity to identify and discuss risk and protection factors associated with gambling as an addiction.

Motivational Interviewing

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the basics of Motivational Interviewing (MI). MI is a non-judgmental, non-confrontational approach that can be used to promote healthy behavior change when working with clients in the context of HIV prevention and substance abuse.  Participants will explore strategies that seek to help clients think differently about their behavior and ultimately to consider what might be gained through change.
