Webinar Description: This two hour webinar was recorded on March 20th, 2012, and is designed to introduce HIV providers to the concepts of mental health/mental disorders and cultural influences. Providers will review basic screening of "red flags" and the importance of appropriate mental health referrals. Educational Course Goals: 1. Define the terms mental health and mental disorders 2. List values, communication styles, and healing practices about mental health/mental illness within different cultures 3. Define the term "red flags" as it pertains to mental health 4. Identify the difference between screening and assessment 5. State at least 5 guidelines of communicating with clients about making mental health referrals Overall Goal: Increase knowledge about mental health and the referral process.

About the Presenter: Mary McCarty-Arias is the Program Manager for the AIDS Institute contract at the Training Institute at NDRI. She also works on the COCE (Co-Occurring Center for Excellence) where she developed a training matrix to assess training curricula on co-occurring disorders) and developed trainings on evidence-based and consensus-based practices for persons with COD. She has worked for a number of agencies nationwide: Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA), National Association for Drug Abuse Problems (NADAP) and the National Drug Court Initiative (NDCI). She is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC).

About the Co-Presenter: Joe Lunievicz is Director of the Training Institute at NDRI. He has over 20 years experience in training, curriculum writing, program development and management specializing in the public health fields of substance abuse and sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS.
